VELOX GmbH (“VELOX”), a leading distributor of raw material specialities for the plastics, composites, rubber and coatings industries announces a successful product launch of Trinseo plastic material for medical devices application in Poland.

Trinseo plastic can now be found in an innovative mobile fetal monitoring device developed by Mo Fe Ma, a start-up medical devices company headquartered in Poland. Mo Fe Ma was formed in cooperation with Techprotekt, another Poland-based medical devices company, and Malopolska Agencja Rozwuju Regionalnego SA. for the purpose of introducing the device – ZuzaMED – to expectant mothers in the Polish marketplace.

ZuzaMED is a small, portable device that rests on the maternal body and monitors the health condition of the fetus as it develops. It is worn across the belly and can be used without any restriction to length of time.

The monitor’s housing is made of Trinseo’s ignition resistant EMERGE™ PC/ABS 7700 Advanced Resins. The material is widely used and accepted in the medical device industry and meets the technical requirements of the application: These requirements include biocompatibility for extended skin contact, low density for light weighting, and UL 94 flame retardancy to provide for the user’s safety. The material also needed to be durable to withstand movement and jarring, resist dirt and grime, and be able to be cleaned with a 40% alcohol solution.

VELOX, a distributor of Trinseo medical resins in Europe with a speciality in medical polymers, successfully positioned the material. The company had been working with Mo Fe Ma since 2014 on the application, providing sample stock for assessment and evaluation and offering regulatory and biocompatibility guidance and documentation. ZuzaMED was commercialised in 2016 after a careful product development process.

François Minec, General Manager at VELOX comments: “The material met all the requirements of the highly regulated medical devices industry and it provided the technical requirements needed for the application. Trinseo’s material was unique in that the ABS component benefited from Trinseo’s proprietary mass polymerisation technology (vs an emulsion process) which results in exceptionally white base resin for colouring the ZuzaMED device.

This is the first product offered by Mo Fe Ma. It is considered by Poland officials to be of major importance for soon-to-be moms and their children. The device can be purchased at www.zuzamed.pl

The ZUZAMED device is CE 2274 approved by TUV Nord Polska Sp. z o.o., fulfilling both EN DIN 13485:2012 and 9342/EEC-MDD requirements. With these approvals in place, Mo Fe Ma is now focused to expand its reach beyond the domestic Polish market.

VELOX expands ITALMATCH portfolio with new flame retardant products

VELOX GmbH (“VELOX”), a European leader in the marketing and distribution of raw material specialities for the plastics, composites, rubber, paints and coatings industries, announces its extended product portfolio in partnership with Italmatch Chemicals who are specialised in performance additives for lubricants, water and oil management as well as plastics.

VELOX has been distributing Italmatch’s Masteret™, Melagard™ and Phoslite™ ranges since 2012 in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, United Kingdom, Turkey, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.

PhosliteTM are light phosphorus based halogen free flame retardants. Due to their high phosphorus content they are highly effective and show very good  thermal stability. The PhosliteTM grades are non-toxic and fully colourable (white powder) which allows the application especially in PP and polyolefins.

Among the new products Phoslite™ EXP PP/35 & EXP PP/36 is an advanced intumescent system for polyolefins based on Phoslite™. Compared to existing systems Phoslite™ intumescent systems are based on different phosphorus valence numbers and condensation states, resulting in lower dosing. They offer very high UL-94 efficiency and char forming. In addition, Phoslite™ shows zero halogens, low smoke and a good resistance to a humid environment. The unique property profile of these flame retardants includes high compatibility with glass fibres, excellent aging, low tinting as well as easy dosing and processability.

MasteretTM are microencapsulated and polymer-bound red phosphorus based flame retardant masterbatches. The physical form allows a safe transportation, handling and incorporation of red phosphorus. Additionally, Italmatch’s proprietary technology has drastically reduced / eliminated the total emission during processing and in final products.
MasteretTM is designed for a range of thermoplastic materials like PA66, EVA, PWC, as well as latex, rubbers, coatings and epoxy (in pasty form). Main applications are electrical installation systems, industrial switching units, household electrical equipment, automation technology and automotive, where the colour is of no concern.

MelagardTM is a non-toxic, environmental friendly product family of melamine salt based flame retardants. They are highly efficient, less corrosive and colorable. Compounds including MelagardTM show good electronical and mechanical properties while they have low smoke density. These products are available as Melamine Cyanurate and Melamine Phosphate. The main applications are in PA 6, PA 66, polyolefins and coatings.

VELOX to distribute Anobex™ from MSM Poly

VELOX GmbH (“VELOX”), a European leader in the marketing and distribution of raw material specialities for the plastics, composites, additives and paints and coatings industries, is delighted to announce its distribution agreement with MSM Poly. VELOX is distributing acrylonitrile methyl acrylate copolymer (AMAC) latex resin which production is actively scaling up by MSM Poly at the moment. The company plans to sell under the trade name Anobex™ and is progressing with the delivery and installation of production equipment.

MSM Poly is developing Anobex™ as a replacement for the AMAC resin known as Barex®, which INEOS ceased manufacturing September 22. MSM Poly had been negotiating to acquire the Barex® name and related intellectual property from INEOS, but those discussions ended recently with no agreement. Peter Schmitt comments: “That development, however, has not impeded MSM Poly's efforts to bring Anobex™ to market”.

Customers now are receiving initial pilot lots and report successful equivalence testing. Inde-pendent laboratories also have confirmed that the material is equivalent, using industry standard testing procedures such as FTIR.

Additionally, according to MSM Poly managing member Peter Schmitt, companies already have successfully processed Anobex™ resin into both film and injection moulded parts.
Qualification runs of 1 to 5 tons will begin from February 2017 and will then go to customers for qualification and approval. MSM Poly plans to launch full commercial production of
Anobex™ resin by the fourth quarter next year.
