LIFE`s solutions comply with the European Union’s Biocidal Products Regulation (EU BPR 528/ 2012). Furthermore, free antimicrobial testing in accordance with ISO 22196 or JIS Z 2801 against bacteria and ISO 846 or ASTM G21 against fungi as well as testing in accordance with other special organisms are available upon request.

At the “CLARIANT Healthcare Solutions Color Design & Packaging Day” in Cambridge, VELOX presented what is at stake when it comes to the right material choice for the development of medical and pharmaceutical devices.
The use of polymers in medical devices has been growing steadily over the last years, replacing glass, metal and other conventional materials. However, when it comes to the right choice of polymer, some pains and pitfalls have to be taken into consideration. This was the topic of a presentation held by VELOX GmbH at the “CLARIANT Healthcare Solutions Color Design & Packaging Day” in Cambridge at the end of November.
“The development of medical and pharmaceutical devices takes time and money and is strictly regulated”, says Anja Flossbach, Mechanical Engineer and Business Development Manager, Medical Plastics, at VELOX. “Therefore, the right choice of material is crucial for developers to succeed when it comes to compliance regulations, certification processes and, most importantly, providing a high-quality product.”
There are at least five criteria that have to be evaluated thoroughly when selecting materials for specific medical or pharmaceutical applications. “On the one hand, of course, one has to consider the manufacturer’s design and application specifications”, continues Flossbach. “On the other hand, the material properties are key aspects to be scrutinised with regard to these specifications. And last but not least, pricing as well as regulatory and handling aspects are critical for the products’ successful realisation and market entry.”
Preventing colour change, melting and breakage
Housings for diagnostic and monitoring equipment for hospitals, for instance, often have to withstand highly aggressive and concentrated cleaning agents. This can cause stress cracking in the plastics. If they actually break, fluids can penetrate into the medical device, damaging the often expensive electronics. Hence, it is crucial to use the right material. “Upon examining the application specifications, we might introduce a PC/PET for hospital equipment, whereas PC/ABS or ABS could be considered for homecare devices, where less aggressive cleaning agents are typically used”, explains Flossbach.
Similarly, different polymers react differently when it comes to the sterilisation of medical devices. To avoid colour change or loss of mechanical properties in processes like steam sterilisation, materials have to be particularly resistant, notably to high temperatures.
The right TPU for medical implants
Another example are implantable materials. Many medical-grade polymer suppliers do not allow the implantation of their materials into the body or restrict it to particular time limits, typically 24 hours or 30 days. Nevertheless, there are material options for long-term implant applications (medical device classification 2a or higher). “Our partner Lubrizol does not restrict the use of their TPUs to 30 day implants. Device designers are free to select from a wide TPU portfolio the most suitable grades to be tested and considered for each specific application”, says VELOX’ medical plastics expert.
Medical compounds: what’s in them?
Regulatory approval of customised compounds is another issue that can be difficult to handle if the device manufacturer does not have full transparency on the compound. To ease these processes for our customers, VELOX’ partner IPC, who develops tailored compounds for medical applications, discloses compound formulae on the certificate of analysis.

The material features extremely high purity and whiteness combined with high quality and homogeneity.
The natural calcium carbonate is extracted and refined at in-house plants by VELOX’s Croatian partner White Rock Minerals, one of the country’s leading exporters of mineral raw materials, holding approximately 350 million tonnes of reserves of this extremely white limestone.
“The calcite fillers offered by VELOX feature chemical purity of over 98 percent and, at a Ry value of >95.5, achieve a very high degree of whiteness”, says Marten Reimers, Product Manager CASE (Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants and Elastomers) at VELOX.
This results in numerous advantages for the different user groups. Calcium carbonate is the major extender in paints and coatings. Its fineness and grain size distribution can help improve the opacity of coating systems. “With minimum heavy metal and iron oxide content, CaCO3 is much in demand by manufacturers of high-grade emulsion paints as well as compounders who rely on top quality and wish to avoid troublesome impurities”, explains Reimers. “As iron oxide residues can cause efflorescence in plasterwork and façade paints, calcium carbonate’s purity ensures highly durable coatings.”
In plastics processing, calcium carbonate is by far the most important mineral. Thanks to a high level of whiteness, the CaCO3 fillers from VELOX help save on white pigments such as titanium dioxide that are not only expensive but also abrasive. “Limestone fillers are also softer and less crystalline than comparable marble powders, helping preserve machinery”, adds Reimers.
Other applications of calcium carbonate include rubber processing, carpet backings made of foamed latex, sealants and adhesives, glass production and composites.
As distributor of high-quality calcium carbonate, VELOX provides decentralised and flexible logistics across Europe, ensuring rapid deliveries. The product is shipped from strategically positioned handling centres, avoiding transport routes longer than 300 km. Bespoke solutions and consulting continue to be available for the various applications.

Enka®-Channel is a flow feeder for resin infusion. It insures the optimal resin flow during the vacuum infusion process and causes less resin waste. It has a high compression resistance, is easy to cut and can be quickly fixed in the mould. Furthermore, it does not leave any imprints on the surface and junctions are easily possible.
Enka®-Fusion is a flow media for resin infusion. It outperforms traditional meshes in resin distribution and guarantees a quick and even resin distribution. Short infusion times, an optimal resin speed and reduced waste of resin are some of the beneficial characteristics of the Enka®-Fusion. Moreover, it is easily mouldable and very flexible.´
The main application fields of Enka®-Channel and Enka®-Fusion are the marine and wind industries, for example to produce wind turbine blades and catamarans. “Compared to spiral tubes the main advantages of the Enka® products are better homogeneity of the resin flow and less print through”, highlights Gradys.

KFBS is especially suitable as high-quality transparent flame retardant for PC. The addition of a small quantity (ca. 0.1%) can make flame resistance effects reach V0. Moreover, KFBS does not contain chromium, cadmium, lead, mercury as well as PBDEs and will neither affect the transparency of final products, nor its original physical properties.
